West Pokot drops from cool highlands around Kapenguria and Lelan down through the Marich Pass to hot lowlands around Sigor, Kacheliba and Alale. The county's economy follows that slope. Up high, farmers grow maize, beans, potatoes and fruit and keep dairy cattle. Lower down, pastoral families move cattle, goats and camels between markets, and artisanal gold mining adds cash income in parts of the county.

Makutano, just below Kapenguria on the Kitale to Lodwar road, is the commercial hub. Agro-dealers, hardware stores, banks, SACCOs, transporters and wholesalers serve the whole county from there. Kapenguria itself carries history: the 1952 to 1953 trial of the Kapenguria Six took place in the town, and the site is now a museum. The Turkwel Gorge dam on the county's northern edge supplies power to the national grid.
