Turkana is Kenya's largest county, stretching from the Kerio and Turkwel rivers to the western shore of Lake Turkana and the borders with Uganda and South Sudan. Pastoralism is still the main way of life, but the economy around Lodwar has broadened. Fishing on the lake from Kalokol and Ferguson's Gulf, the oil discoveries in the South Lokichar basin and a large humanitarian sector have all brought new money, new suppliers and new demand for services.

Kakuma refugee camp and the Kalobeyei settlement are among the biggest concentrations of people and organisations in the region. UN agencies, international NGOs, contractors and small enterprises run by refugees and hosts alike all trade there. Lokichoggio, once the base for relief flights into South Sudan, keeps a logistics character, while Lodwar holds the county government, Turkana University College and most of the hotels and wholesalers.

That mix means many Turkana businesses sell to organisations that check suppliers online and pay electronically. A hotel in Lodwar is booked by staff who search before they travel. A transporter is vetted by a procurement team in Nairobi.
