Marsabit is Kenya's largest county by area, running from Mount Marsabit's forested slopes across the Chalbi Desert to the eastern shore of Lake Turkana and north to the Ethiopian border at Moyale. Most residents are pastoralists, and Gabra, Borana, Rendille, Samburu, Turkana, Burji and Dasanach communities all call the county home. Livestock, especially camels, goats and cattle, remains the backbone of the economy.

Two big changes have reshaped the county in recent years. The tarmacked A2 highway from Isiolo through Marsabit to Moyale has turned the route into a major trade corridor with Ethiopia, and the one-stop border post at Moyale handles a steady flow of trucks and travellers. On the Lake Turkana side, the Lake Turkana Wind Power project near Loiyangalani is one of the largest wind farms in Africa, bringing engineers, contractors and service needs to a remote area.

Marsabit also has tourism assets that few people have seen: Marsabit National Park with its crater lakes, Sibiloi National Park on the lake shore and the cultural festival held at Loiyangalani.
