Laikipia is a high, open plateau between Mount Kenya and the Rift Valley, and much of it is given over to ranches and private and community conservancies. Ol Pejeta, just outside Nanyuki, is the best known, with its rhinos and the Sweetwaters chimpanzee sanctuary, but there are many more lodges and camps spread across the county. Tourism here is high-value, and most guests book from abroad or from Nairobi long before they arrive.

Nanyuki is the county's busiest town. It sits on the equator at the foot of Mount Kenya, hosts the Kenya Air Force base at Laikipia and the British Army training unit, and has grown a lively mix of cafés, supermarkets, outfitters, rental homes and schools that serve residents, soldiers, climbers and safari visitors. Nyahururu, at the other end of the county, is known for Thomson's Falls, high-altitude athletics training and Laikipia University nearby, while Rumuruti is the administrative headquarters.
