Iten calls itself the Home of Champions, and the title is earned. The town sits at about 2,400 metres on the edge of the Elgeyo Escarpment, and for decades it has produced and hosted many of the world's best distance runners. St Patrick's High School built that tradition, and today local and foreign athletes fill training camps, guest houses and rented homes around Iten and the Kamariny Stadium track.

Below the escarpment lies the Kerio Valley, hot and dry, with mangoes and other fruit grown around Tot and Arror, honey, and livestock. Up in the highlands around Chepkorio, Kapcherop and the Cherangany Hills the land is cool and green, with dairy, maize and potatoes. Kapsowar has its well-known mission hospital, Tambach has its teachers' college, and the county works closely with nearby Eldoret for trade, banking and travel.

That makes Elgeyo Marakwet unusually international for a rural county. Runners from Europe, North America and Asia search for camps and rooms in Iten before booking flights, and adventure visitors look up the Kerio Valley viewpoints and paragliding.
