Kisii town is the commercial centre of the Gusii highlands and one of the busiest towns in western Kenya. Traders come in from Nyamira, Migori, Homa Bay and Narok to buy stock from its wholesalers, and the A1 road carries goods north to Kisumu and south towards the Isebania border. Kisii University, Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital and the Kisii National Polytechnic bring in students, patients and staff from across the region every day.

Around the town the land is green, steep and intensively farmed. Smallholders grow tea for KTDA factories, bananas that travel by lorry to Nairobi markets, coffee, avocados and vegetables. In Tabaka, families have carved soapstone for generations, and those carvings now sell to tourists and gift shops far beyond Kenya.
