When someone in Nairobi searches "dentist near me", "car hire Westlands" or "web design company Nairobi", Google usually shows a map with three businesses under it before any normal results. That block is called the local pack or Maps pack. For many local businesses it is the most valuable space on the internet, because the people searching want to buy now and nearby.

This guide explains how Google decides who appears there and what you can do about it. Everything here is practical and free to start, apart from your time.

How Google ranks local businesses

Google says local results are based on three things:

  • Relevance — how well your business matches what the person searched for.
  • Distance — how far your business is from the searcher, or from the location they typed.
  • Prominence — how well known and trusted your business is, judged from reviews, links, mentions and your website.

You cannot move your premises closer to every customer, so distance is mostly out of your hands. Relevance and prominence are where the work goes.

Step 1: Set up and verify your Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile is the listing that appears in Maps and the local pack. Without one, you cannot appear there at all.

  1. Go to Google Business Profile and search for your business. If a listing already exists, claim it rather than creating a duplicate.
  2. Use your real business name, exactly as it appears on your signage and registration. Adding keywords such as "Best Plumber Nairobi" to the name breaks Google's guidelines and can get the listing suspended.
  3. Choose the most accurate primary category. This is one of the strongest relevance signals. Add secondary categories only if they truly describe what you do.
  4. Enter your address. If you serve customers at their location and do not receive visitors, set yourself up as a service-area business and hide the address, then list the areas you serve.
  5. Complete verification. Google decides the method; it is often a short video showing your signage, premises and proof that you run the business.

Fill in everything

A complete profile helps both Google and customers. Add your opening hours (including holiday hours), phone number, website, services with short descriptions, products if you sell them, and photos of your premises, team and work. Real photos do better than stock images. Keep the details current: a customer who finds you closed during your listed hours is likely to leave a bad review.

Step 2: Keep your name, address and phone consistent

Google cross-checks your details across the web. If your profile says "Shop 12, Westlands Mall", your website says "Westlands, Nairobi" and an old directory listing shows a phone number you stopped using in 2021, Google has less confidence that any of it is right.

Pick one exact format for your business name, address and phone number, often called NAP, and use it everywhere: your website footer, your contact page, your Google profile, Facebook, LinkedIn and any directory listing. Then hunt down old listings with outdated details and correct them.

Step 3: Build a steady stream of genuine reviews

Reviews are one of the clearest prominence signals, and they persuade customers too. What matters is a steady flow of honest reviews over time, not a burst of 50 in one week.

  • Ask at the right moment — when the job is done and the customer is happy. Send the review link by WhatsApp or SMS so it is one tap away.
  • Ask everyone. Asking only happy customers ("review gating") goes against Google's policies.
  • Never buy reviews or post them on behalf of customers. Google removes fake reviews and can restrict your profile.
  • Reply to every review, good and bad. Keep replies short and polite. For a negative review, acknowledge the problem and offer to resolve it offline. Future customers read your replies.

Step 4: Make your website support your profile

Your website is part of how Google judges relevance and prominence. A weak site holds back a strong profile.

Match your website to your profile

The website linked from your profile should clearly say what you do and where. Put your city in the page title and main heading where it is natural, for example "Dental Clinic in Kilimani, Nairobi". Show your full name, address and phone number in the footer, exactly as on your profile, and embed a Google map on your contact page.

Add LocalBusiness structured data

Structured data is code that tells search engines the facts about your business in a format they can read without guessing. For a local business, use the LocalBusiness schema type from schema.org, or a more specific subtype such as Dentist, Restaurant or AutoRepair. The generic Organization type is meant for companies in general; LocalBusiness is the type designed for a business with a physical location or service area.

Include at least:

  • your business name, URL and logo;
  • your full address, including street, area, city (Nairobi) and country (KE);
  • your geo-coordinates (latitude and longitude), which you can copy from Google Maps;
  • your phone number and opening hours;
  • links to your official social profiles, using the sameAs property.

Add the markup in JSON-LD format, then check it with Google's Rich Results Test. The details must match what visitors can see on the page and what your Business Profile says.

Speed and mobile

Most local searches in Kenya happen on phones, often on mobile data. A slow, clumsy site loses the customer even if you rank. Test your site on an ordinary Android phone, not just your office computer. Aim for pages that load in a few seconds and buttons that are easy to tap, especially "Call" and "WhatsApp".

Step 5: Create pages for each service and area

If you offer several services, give each one its own page. A single "Services" page that lists ten things in one paragraph tells Google very little. A page called "Teeth Whitening in Kilimani" with real detail, prices or price ranges, photos and FAQs gives Google a clear match for that search.

If you genuinely serve several areas, a page per area can help, but only if each page has something useful and specific to say: who you have worked with there, how you get there, local delivery times. Pages that are identical apart from the town name are what Google calls doorway pages, and they can hurt more than they help.

A citation is any mention of your business name, address and phone number on another website. Links from relevant local websites are even stronger. Good sources in Kenya include:

  • business directories and industry listings relevant to your sector;
  • professional bodies and associations you belong to;
  • the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, if you are a member;
  • suppliers, partners and landlords who list their clients or tenants;
  • local news sites, event pages and sponsorships;
  • Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram and other profiles in your business name.

Quality beats quantity. Ten accurate listings on real sites do more than hundreds on spammy directories.

Step 7: Keep the profile active

Google Business Profile lets you publish updates, offers and events. Posting regularly does not guarantee a higher ranking, but it shows customers you are open and active, and it gives them a reason to choose you. Add new photos as your work changes. Check the profile each month for edits suggested by the public: anyone can suggest a change to your listing, and Google sometimes accepts wrong ones.

How long does local SEO take?

Fixing your profile, categories and details can make a difference within weeks. Reviews, citations and content build up over months. In busy categories in central Nairobi, competition is strong, so expect a sustained effort rather than a one-off fix. Anyone who guarantees you the number one spot in Maps is promising something they do not control.

A quick checklist

  2. Choose the right primary category.
  3. Fill in every field and add real photos.

  5. Ask every customer for a review and reply to all of them.
  6. Add LocalBusiness schema to your website.
  7. Create a page for each main service.
  8. Build accurate citations on relevant sites.
  9. Check your profile monthly for unwanted edits.
